Chapter Eleven: No Escape

June

I felt his heart beating beneath his ribcage as we laid there together. If only I could wake up like this every day. The room just seemed so peaceful. Light filtered in through the closed curtains, leaving glimmers along the floor. We could hear the soft hum of traffic outside along the street, the only other sign of life. This morning, I felt better than I had before and I had no doubt Ryan had something to do with that.

His fingers lazily smoothed my hair, nearly lulling me back to sleep. Only the rumble of his voice kept me awake. “My dad called.” He sounded reserved as if he didn’t know how to feel about it just yet.

“How did that go?” I asked, glancing up at him.

He kept his eyes trained on the far wall, a distant look on his face. “It went alright, I guess. He’s making an effort to be…civil. Understanding. It’s new.”

“But it’s good?” I prompted, poking him in the ribs.

Ryan let out a short laugh. “Yeah, it’s good. You can say ‘I told you so’ if you want.”

“I was going to say no such thing,” I replied, unable to keep the grin off my face. “What did you two talk about?”

He hesitated for a beat. “My dad asked me if I wanted to join the Rebel Saints again.”

“And what did you tell him this time?” I held my breath waiting for his answer.

“That I’d think about it.” He sighed, flipping over to face me.

I scooted back, propping my head up with my hand.

“We aren’t even in the same state right now,” Ryan continued. “Maybe if we go back…”

I noted the, if and the maybe. “You want to go back home someday?” I asked, my stomach sinking.

Ryan stared down at the covers between us, twisting them between two fingers. “You want to leave for good?”

I had no doubts about this. I wanted to leave. I had needed to. I had too much to escape from. Ryan didn’t understand this, I could tell in the way he’d asked that question. He didn’t know the full reasons why I was running. Not really. Sure, he knew about my father and the video. But what was it Zach had said?

Knowing is different from seeing it.

If Ryan actually saw the video, and if he really saw what my dad was capable of, he’d want to run too.

“Maybe,” I replied vaguely.

Ryan’s eyes flicked up. “Was it really so bad?”

Now it was my turn to sigh and roll over. I flopped onto my back, staring up at the blank ceiling. “You don’t know what it was like for me,” I told him quietly. “Growing up with my dad…then that video. I was completely ostracized. There’s nothing left for me back there.”

“Not even me?”

I shot him a sharp look. “That’s not fair.”

Ryan studied me for a moment then he reached out to pull me closer. “No, you’re right. That wasn’t. And you’re right about me not knowing what it was like for you.
